Prescription records, dispensing and job tracking, frame and lens stock, recalls, and local claiming or tax (NHS eGOS, GST, VAT) checked against each vendor's own documentation.

The best optician software depends on where you dispense. UK practices that submit NHS eGOS claims should shortlist Optisoft, Ocuco Acuitas 3, Blink OMS or Optix. Independent opticians in India, Canada and other markets get the most for their money from OptoSoft, our own product, at US$399 per store a year.
The best optician software depends on where you dispense. A UK practice that submits NHS sight-test and voucher claims electronically needs software with eGOS built in, and that narrows the field to UK-native systems such as Optisoft, Ocuco Acuitas 3, Blink OMS and Optix. An independent optician in India, Canada, the Gulf or anywhere else without eGOS gets far more for the money from a cloud platform priced per store, which is where OptoSoft ranks first. Disclosure: OptoSoft is our own product, made by the company that runs this site. We scored it on the same criteria as the others, and we say plainly below where it falls short for UK practices.
Optician Software or Optical Software: Which Do You Need?
"Optician software" usually means a practice management system for a dispensing-led business: patient records, prescriptions, recalls, dispensing and stock, with the sight test as one appointment among many. That is a narrower job than the five categories in our guide to the types of optical software, and a different job from a US optometry EHR built around medical billing.
If you mainly sell eyewear and the counter is your bottleneck, a dedicated till may matter more than recalls and clinical records. In that case, start with our comparison of optical shop POS systems and come back here once billing is settled.
What Optician Software Has to Do
Every system below covers the basics. The differences show up in five places:
- Prescription records. Sphere, cylinder, axis, add and pupillary distance stored per patient, with history, so a repeat order never starts from a paper card.
- Dispensing and job tracking. The order moves from prescription to lab to collection, and staff can see which jobs are late.
- Frame and lens stock. Frames, lenses and contact lenses tracked as separate stock, ideally by barcode. Our guide to frame and lens inventory for dispensaries covers what good stock control looks like.
- Recalls. Automatic reminders by SMS, email or WhatsApp when a patient is due a sight test or a contact lens reorder.
- Local claiming and tax. In England and Scotland that means eGOS, the electronic submission of NHS General Ophthalmic Services forms. In India it means GST invoicing; in the Gulf, VAT.
That last point decides most shortlists. A system without eGOS can still record an NHS voucher against a sale, but your staff will submit the claim somewhere else. For a busy UK practice, that double entry costs more than any licence saving.
The Shortlist at a Glance
| Software | Best fit | Published price | NHS eGOS | Hosting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OptoSoft | India, Canada, Gulf and global independents | Free records plan; US$399 per store a year; ₹6,000 in India | Records GOS voucher type and value; no electronic claim submission | Cloud (on-premise on Enterprise) |
| Optisoft | UK independents who want to pay by module | £160 a month base, £25 per extra module a month | English and Scottish eGOS | Local, or managed cloud for £55 a month |
| Ocuco Acuitas 3 | UK practices and chains wanting one suite | On request | GOS1, GOS3 and GOS4 | Cloud or on-premise |
| Blink OMS | Small UK practices that want simple | Not published; free trial | Integrated, submits to PCSE | Cloud |
| Optix | UK groups from one site to fifty-plus | £417 per site a month (first two sites) | Listed as a feature | Managed private cloud |
| Gofrugal | Indian multi-store optical retailers | On request; 30-day trial | Not applicable | On-premise ERP with cloud alerts |
Prices are each vendor's current published figures and exclude VAT where the vendor says so. They change, so confirm the figure in writing before you sign.
Is There Free Optician Software?
Searches for "optician software free download" are common, and most results are trial installers or unsupported freeware. Be careful with anything that stores patient records and prescriptions but offers no support, no updates and no data export. In the UK, those records are personal health data under UK GDPR, and you remain responsible for them.
The honest free options on this list are narrower than the search suggests:
- OptoSoft has a free plan that covers patient records and prescriptions. POS billing, inventory, multi-store and the CRM need a paid plan, according to its pricing table.
- Optisoft gives new customers 12 months of subscription free, with free data transfer, setup and training, per its prices page. Cloud hosting is charged separately.
- Blink OMS and Gofrugal offer free trials, not free plans.
The trade-offs are the same ones we set out for clinical systems in free vs paid optometry EHR software: free costs you support, data portability and, sooner or later, a migration.
How to Choose for a UK Practice
Start with eGOS. If you claim NHS sight tests and vouchers every day, choose between Optisoft, Acuitas 3, Blink OMS and Optix, and treat OptoSoft as a second system only if you also trade outside the UK.
- One practice, tight budget: Blink OMS or Optisoft. Optisoft lets you pay only for the modules you use. Third-party listings describe Blink as priced per practice rather than per user; its own site publishes no prices.
- Several sites, one owner: Optix or Acuitas 3. Both are built for groups; Optix publishes a per-site price, Acuitas does not.
- Clinic-heavy practice: Acuitas 3, which bundles an optometry EMR with dispensing and POS.
Before you commit, ask each vendor for a full data export from your current system, the cost of migration and the notice period. Optisoft states it has no long contract; the others do not publish terms.
How to Choose in India, Canada and Other Markets
Outside the UK, eGOS does not apply, and price per store becomes the deciding factor. OptoSoft is priced at US$399 per store a year internationally and ₹6,000 in India, with unlimited users. It also supports nine languages and WhatsApp invoices. Gofrugal suits Indian chains that already think in ERP terms and want lens-power suggestions and job tracking on premises.

How We Scored These Systems
Each system was scored out of 10 on features (40%), ease of use (30%) and value (30%), weighted for a dispensing-led optician rather than a US medical practice. The scores are our editorial assessment, based on each vendor's documentation, published pricing and public information. We did not run paid trials of every system, and we have not used vendor-supplied ratings. OptoSoft is our own product and is left out of the rating structured data on this page.
Our Recommendation
If you are an independent optician outside the UK, start with OptoSoft: it is the cheapest complete platform here and the only one built for several countries at once. If you are in England or Scotland and claim NHS work daily, pick a UK-native system with eGOS. Choose Optisoft if you want modular pricing, Acuitas 3 for one clinical and retail suite, Blink OMS for simplicity, or Optix for a growing group. Then read our optical retail shop software comparison to check the counter side of the decision.

Standout feature: An optometry EMR, dispensing, POS, stock and multi-site management with GOS1, GOS3 and GOS4 eGOS.
Acuitas 3 is Ocuco's practice management suite for UK opticians, from independents to large chains. It combines an optometry EMR, practice management, dispensing, POS and billing, stock control, recall and marketing, and analytics, with multi-site management. It covers patients, appointments, recalls, examinations and sales, with online booking from the practice website and SMS reminders that flag patients who repeatedly miss appointments. - Cloud based, no backups to manage
- Online booking and SMS reminders
- Free trial available
Cons

It suggests suitable lenses from the customer's power reading, keeps prescription history, and tracks each order from prescription through job work, grinding, fitting and billing. Chains get centralised inventory, pricing, purchasing, accounting and CRM, with mobile alerts on sales. It runs as an on-premise ERP that works without an internet connection.
